Wind Energy is the most common source of renewable energy (together with solar energy). It is very important to understand its advantages in order to be able to fully exploit its potentials.

Wind, like all renewable energy sources, is ultimately powered from the sun. As the sun heats the earth, the warm air rises and the cool air descents to fill in the gap. This unequal redistribution of heat creates the wind. So as long there is sun there will be wind. Moreover, during the power generation there is no pollution to the environment (so called green energy). As a result there are practically unlimited potentials in power generation from wind renewable sources. This is Wind Energy’s major advantage.

Wind power is mainly harnessed throughout the world via the use of wind farms. In most places of the world there is plenty of wind allowing for the efficient generation of electricity from wind farms. However, due to the variation of the speed of the wind the location of the wind farm must be carefully selected. Even though it’s difficult to generate constant level of electricity from a single wind farm throughout the year, with proper planning at a national level, the wind farms can be placed in such locations so that the overall power generation if the country is less variable. The constant power generation levels can be much more accurate if employ a diversified energy mix strategy that combines power generation from other renewable energy sources as well (solar energy, geothermal energy, biomass energy etc). The last few years there is also a lot of development in energy storage capabilities that will allow the extra power generation from renewable energy sources (usually in off peak hours) to be stored for later use.

Another advantage of using wind energy, is the fact that the last 2-3 years investment opportunities in wind energy are a lot more viable first because of the lowered cost of wind turbines (5 times less) and second due to the increase of the efficiency of wind turbines (100 times more efficient). Moreover, investment opportunities are increased due to the aggressive roadmaps of various countries (particularly US, EU and China) in renewable energy investments. US for example, has a roadmap to cover 20% of its power needs by 2030 from wind energy. As a result many countries provide subsidize programs which on some occasions reach 50%.

Most countries now realize the impact power generation from wind energy is the most common source of renewable energy (together with solar energy). First of all, it provides many new job opportunities, but most importantly it allows countries to maintain price stability and become self sufficient as it eliminates the dependency on primary fuels (oil, gas). Wind power generation does not “suffer” from price fluctuations and with proper planning, is practically risk free.

Renewable energy is the future. We need to move on from oil, coal and gas and start looking at cleaner opportunities. By the rate we currently are polluting our atmosphere, we don’t really have much clue what the worst-case scenario for the earth is. Lets take a look at the some of the upcoming renewable energy sources.

All renewable energy sources will last for thousands of years in the future, most of them as long as the sun keeps burning. We will have bigger problems to face before it runs of fuel for its fusion processes (such as the earth will be swallowed by the sun).

It all starts with the sun: Fusion processes in the Sun results in massive amounts of energy, some of which is absorbed by our planet. This energy can be used to generate electricity by photovoltaic solar panels or it can be used later on in the energy system.

This energy also is the foundation for wind energy. A complete overview of this energy source can be found at wind energy pros and cons, but the basic gist is this: It creates high and low pressures and temperatures, which again creates winds. Now we have air in motion, also known as kinetic energy. This drives large wind turbines around and the generator uses the now mechanical energy and outputs power.

Inside the core of our planet there is magma. The processes that happen in the sun are fairly similar to that of our own planet. The result is a lot of energy that can be exploited through the use of what we call geothermal energy systems. Read more on this at geothermal energy pros and cons.

The next renewable energy I’m going to talk about is geothermal. We can use geothermal energy for a wide array of purposes. Bathing in hot water springs is on of them, but this energy source can also be used for generating power as well as a more advanced version of the normal heat pump, exploiting the fact that the temperatures underground are more stable than those over the surface

It is clear that renewable energy sources will replace the polluting and non-renewable sources at one point. How long can we wait for this transition to happen? There is no one that knows for sure how bad this situation can get. More money needs to be spent on research and further development of renewable energy to speed up the process.

Finding alternate sources of energy in today’s society is becoming more important than ever before. The big players in alternate energy are wind and solar energy. Of the two, wind energy is perhaps the least well understood. If you’ve ever wondered what is wind energy, then this article will help you understand the basics of how it works and how it can be used.

The first thing you are probably wondering is, “What is wind energy”? The answer to this question seems obvious enough. When wind blows, that is energy from the wind. To understand it at a deeper level, you must understand where it comes from and its nature so that you can appreciate the benefits (and challenges) of using it. It is a form of kinetic energy, or energy in motion, and is created by the sun’s impact on the Earth’s atmosphere. As the sun warms the Earth’s surface, heated air over the land (which is formed by the sun’s rays) begins to rise. As this air begins to rise, colder air from lower lying regions fills the vacuum left by the escaping warm air. When this colder air rushes in, we feel this as wind.

After gaining a better understanding of what wind energy is, the next thing you’ll want to consider is how it can be used. Unlike stored energy, such as coal, which must be pulverized and combusted to extract the energy from within it, it is kinetic and therefore readily available. Another example of kinetic energy would be a rushing river. In the same way that water flows and is used to power hydroelectric dams, energy from the wind blows and is used to power wind mills and large wind turbines. The problem with wind is that unlike a river, which is constantly moving, it is intermittent.

Now that you understand what wind power is and how it can be used you are probably wondering what the pros and cons are of using it as a power source.

Put simply, the pros are:

• Free and abundant.
• Inexpensive in kilowatt-per-hour terms.
• Clean in its natural state.

Likewise, the cons are:

• Intermittent. It isn’t available all the time.
• Has higher transfer costs.
• Has high start up costs.

As you can see, wind energy holds great promise for powering our future. It’s virtually limitless supply combined with its cleanliness is only hampered by still burdensome operational costs. However, if these can be overcome through technology, it will become a viable power source for many more people.
