Saving The World, One Cell Phone At A Time
Cell phones are one hot commodity today. Almost everyone has one. Not only are they convenient, but they are also being trashed more frequently for more “up-to-date” phones and are filling our landfills more than any other trash.
Consumers are unaware that by just tossing your old cell phone in the garbage can, they are throwing hazardous materials into the environment. The assumption is that as an individual, what can be done? Not much is going to happen from my one cell phone.
This assumption couldn’t be more wrong. If you are thinking this, think about how many other individuals are thinking the same thing. A lot of people are under this assumption. We leave the responsibility to someone else. Our environment is hurting now because people are not taking any action to help change this cellular problem.
Cell phones leak toxins into the earth and even into our water supply when they go through landfills. There are alternative options for your old cell phones. Instead of throwing your phone into the garbage, consider some of these alternatives:
- Non-profit organizations have cell phone bins and will put the old cell phones to good use.
- Cell phone companies can take your old phone and can either refurbish them or sell their parts to create new products. Others will donate phones to nonprofit organizations or to third world countries that could genuinely use these phones.
- Staples now offers a cell phone recycling program. When you donate a cell phone, you can receive coupons on store products.
- Some companies will actually pay you for your old cell phone donation. These companies will also use pieces and parts to manufacture new products.
- Do you have a young child at home? What child doesn’t like a new toy? Kids love to play make-believe and giving them a non-working cell phone could be one of the coolest things to them.
These are just a few options that you could consider instead of sending your phone to a landfill. It’s less hazardous for our earth. It’s a really easy trick, so pass the word along to your phone contacts.
One by one, we can change the environment, even if it is as small as a cell phone.
