Everyone wants to save money while some want to go green yet ironically many don’t realize that the two actually go hand and hand.
Choosing to go green can actually save you a lot of money in the long run while being of great benefit to our environment.  In the short one though, there are some start-up costs and it’s these costs that scare some people away.
Best to stick to what is realistic for you in terms of what you are able to implement into your lifestyle on a daily basis.  What’s the point of committing to go green if the changes you plan to make are things that you can’t sustain for the long term?
There are easy ways you can go green and save money at the same time without disrupting your normal routine and lifestyle by just making a little bit of effort.  After all our environment will improve with a small consistent effort over time than with flash in the pan major changes that only last a month or two.
Here are some things you can do right now to save money and help preserve our planet:
* Change out your standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.  Yes, these bulbs cost twice or three times as much as a standard bulb.  However, the energy you save by using these bulbs more than make up for the cost.  In fact, a compact fluorescent bulb can save enough money to actually pay for itself within a few months.  These bulbs also last for years, so once you purchase them, you won’t have to worry about changing light bulbs for four years or more.
* Use a clothes line instead of your dryer.  If it’s a nice, warm day, hanging your clothes out to dry can give them that nice, fresh air smell and save you money.
* Likewise, wash your clothes in cold water only if possible.  This saves you electricity since your hot water heater won’t run as much.
* Don’t wash just a few pieces of clothing.  This wastes water and electricity, making your bills that much higher.  Make sure you have a full load when you’re ready to do your laundry.
* Don’t run your dish washer unless it is full for the same reason.  Also, if it has an energy-saver mode, use it instead of running your dish washer in its standard mode.
* Car pool or take publication transportation when you can.  This saves on gas and prevents wear and tear on your car.  It also helps the environment by reducing vehicle emissions.  Some cities encourage inhabitants to take public transportation one day a month by offering discounts or even free tickets.
* If you can, skip transportation altogether and walk or bike to work.  This can save you money while being beneficial to your health.  You’ll incorporate some much needed exercise into your day while saving money and reducing your carbon emissions, a win-win-win situation.
* Add insulation to your home.  By adding several more inches of insulation to your attic, you will help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer since less air will escape through the roof.
* Get a programmable thermostat.  These thermostats will automatically adjust the temperature of your home at the set time.  If your house is empty during the day, for example, you can program it to turn off the heater/air conditioner when you leave for work and then automatically turn it back on about an hour before you get home.
So as you can see, saving money and helping the environment can be as easy as making a few changes in daily life yet add up to some significant changes over time.
