For those who are working at becoming more self sufficient and not relying on the rest of society for your energy needs there are many technologies that are improving to give you a broader selection of options. As these advancements move forward we are seeing more devices emerge that are useful for this purpose such as cheap solar lights.

Solar lights are lighting devices engineered to work as a light fixture capable of being mobile because they don’t have to be plugged into a power source to make them operate. Since the sun is their power source , they ultimately offer endless possibilities in what they can be used for. These lights are extremely useful in that they are designed to be a portable single item able to light an area all from the most abundant source of free energy we have: the sun.

Solar lights are each made through the utilization of one of the most efficient lights available on the market, the LED. In addition to this they are also built with a panel that has a photovoltaic component made to capture the available solar energy, and a rechargeable battery to store the power once it is caught.

Of all the uses these effective lights have one of the most popular is for lighting walkways to things like your vehicle, pool, or garden. They often come in packs of 4, 6, or more, but you can also buy them individually, averaging about $2 for a single light. There are more robust options that give off more effective lighting, however they are also more expensive.

In addition to lighting a pathway, they are also seen as lawn decoration and there are many different options that you can choose from including holiday themes and those in the shape of animals. You can also find models made for indoor use, usually being used in areas such as the garage. These will sometimes have external pads that are used to capture the sunlight when the device is placed in an area that does not naturally get exposed to the sun.

The one downside to solar lights is their limited light that they produce. This does not stop them from being effective lights and one of the most attractive aspects to them is their ease to install. They are cheap to maintain, and because they are powered from the sun they are a potential alternative to standard wired lighting that could save you energy expense.
Although they are only a couple inches in overall size they can be placed just about anywhere and there are a variety of mounting options. Solar lights have been one of the best things to happen in self efficiency, and as technology continues to evolve so to will the power of these amazing lights.

It is completely possible to never have to pay an electric bill ever again. Don’t believe me? Check this out…

Interestingly enough, more and more people today are opting for Solar Panel energy with energy costs rising. By pulling in energy from the sun, you will not only find a financial benefit to the project, but you will also be benefiting the environment. There are no harmful byproducts, no harmful chemicals and no harmful side-effects to solar power energy.

Now, nothing can be this simple. Switching to solar energy does have a few disadvantages. Yes, solar energy will cut down your bills dramatically, but the start-up cost for this network can be quite expensive. Some estimate that by installing this solar power network, it could take up to 15 years to pay itself off.

However, there are a few tips here that can help you cut costs for your project and install these solar panels on your roof. It may be complicated, but it’s possible.

First, you will have to purchase the solar panels. This will be the most expensive part of your solar panel installation.

Second, you will need a generator that will collect the energy you collect from the panels.

Finally, you may need to call your electric company on this one. You need to figure out how the generator connects to the panels and how the entire solar panel system connects to your home’s electric system. If you are inexperienced in wiring, your electric company can help you by either reworking some of the wires or showing you what connects to what.

Remember that before undertaking any project dealing with electricity, you need to turn your home’s power system off. This is the biggest concern when installing your panels.

After you get past the wiring part of the job, the rest of the installation is pretty simple. Install your panels on your roof and then install the generator in an easy access location. Connect everything together and turn your electricity back on in your home. The panels are now working on their own, generating and collecting enough sunlight to light up even the cloudiest of days or long evenings.

When deciding which photovoltaic panels to install on your house there are several factors to consider. These factors fit into three categories: The area you live, including amount of sunshine and state regulations regarding utility company’s reimbursement of unused wattage. The amount of space you have available to support PV panels, and finally whether you are doing the installation yourself or hiring a contractor.

Most states require local utilities to purchase excess wattage from individual providers, but they differ widely as to how this should occur. California regulations force utilities to purchase excess kWh at the retail rate, as well as offering cash back for installation by certified contractors. West Virginia has no such regulation and utility companies deal with excess kWh independently. Many states only require the utility companies to purchase excess power at the wholesale level at the end of their yearly cycle. This would mean that paying for increased PV efficiency would be counterproductive without excess storage capacity.

Home solar panels come in a variety of sizes, weights, efficiencies, and even watts outputs. The industry doesn’t even have a standard DC output rating, so comparing them directly is a fool’s errand without solid parameters. You must consider how much space is available on your roof and how much area for storage capacity. If you are doing this work yourself these are critical factors which could require consultation with a professional. Most comparisons of individual PV units begin with the DC watts which range from 190-230. It is virtually impossible to compare units head to head unless the comparison does a real world assessment which breaks down into price per square foot.

The advantages of hiring a contractor are that different contractors will favor different PV Panels and inverting equipment. Price comparison becomes simple math; the AC kWh per year output versus the cost of installation. The PV panels should have at least a 25 year warranty, the inverter for 10, and the installer warranties his work for 5 years. Individual systems can rate differently, but a slightly higher output might not be worth the extra expense especially if you live in a state with unfavorable excess kWh regulations.

Making the shift to solar power is far easier now than at any time in the past. Most states offer incentives for installing PV systems, including cash back and tax reductions. Selecting a contractor might actually be more important than the individual brand of PV panels, since a smart contractor is going to make sure that you are aware of every incentive program your state offers and how to qualify

Passive solar is a construction technique used to make your home more energy efficient. If you were to really ask yourself when is the best time to make your home efficient? You would easily come to the conclusion that you should design and build your home for energy efficiency. Efficiency and Renewable energies are really the key to improving the health of our planet. Part of the problem with renewable energies are that they aren’t advanced enough or price competitive enough to really take the fight to fossil fuels.

If we make our homes more efficient through passive solar design we reduce our energy needs, and perhaps reduce the initial investment cost on a new solar system. There are several contributing factors on what is slowing the solar revolution.

The roadblocks to solar are two-fold in my mind. The first is the economics. They don’t pay for themselves inside of 10 years. 10 years is the best I have ever seen and that is after maximum state and federal rebates and only if your electricity cost is quite high. We should pick a site, choose a customer, and do the calculation. Every site has monitoring. Why isn’t any of that real data online? This is the second major roadblock in my opinion. The reluctance of the solar industry to divulge the truth. In our society we have grown accustomed to the idea that “sales” is a profession, that there are certain things you can and cannot say.

Even 26 years ago it was unusual to be an honest salesman. Its an oxymoron. You can’t tell people the truth if you want to make sales. I’ve been guilty of this myself in some ways I’m sure. You have to stress the positive and downplay the negative otherwise you don’t paint a clear picture or a fair picture. People expect you to have a bias or at least they should. I always tell people, “Don’t take solar predictions from a solar salesman. I’m the last person you should believe.” The problem is that solar salesmen have been so completely deluded in their promises that it has hurt the reputation of the entire industry. My field is solar heating not solar electricity but the same issues happen with PV as do with solar thermal in the cases where the payback period is 100 years not 10 years and believe me there are plenty of 100 year payback solar electric systems out there.

Solar panels still have many environmental benefits, maybe one day we will be able to give everyone a huge financial bonus as well. There are many different types of solar panels all which provide sustainable energy and understanding how photovoltaic cells work can began to help us solve efficiency problems that may change the world.

Are you planning on adding a solar energy system to your home in the near future? If so, how do you plan to afford it? Even though you’ll be saving money for years after your solar panels are installed the initial costs can be quite high. One of the main benefits of the recent focus on solar energy and solar powered heating/electrical systems is that it has increased the amount of businesses that focus on being solar system installers. This means that you won’t have any particular company monopolizing the market and driving prices sky-high. However, even with the increasingly growing competition, the cost of a solar energy system can still be quite high for some.

There are many ways to finance your new solar energy system, without draining your savings account or emptying your wallet. Your mortgage may actually have a built-in feature that allows you to finance energy efficient updates without eating into your home equity.

These types of mortgages are typically known as “energy efficient mortgages.” They allow you to add the costs of your solar system addition on top of your existing loan amount so that you don’t have to take away from any built-up equity or refinance unnecessarily. Of course, you may have to refinance if you don’t already have an energy efficient mortgage, but it’s best to consult your mortgage lender for details.

In addition to this, many states offer you tax credits and rebates for any energy efficient updates that you make to your home. The federal government sometimes has these available as well, but either way, you’ll have options to work with.

If you’d rather not touch your home mortgage, you can look at a small loan to help finance a new solar system installation. Many banks and credit unions may look more favorably on these types of purposes for their loans, and might work with you to determine the best option for your financing.

If neither of the previous options are appealing or don’t work for you, you might consider discussing payments with your solar system installer. Some solar installers may be willing to work out a payment plan with you, too. Their websites may have some payment information listed, or you may just have to ask.

No matter how you decide to finance your new solar energy system, keep in mind that you’ll be saving yourself some money on future utility payments. Your state may even allow you to send your unused solar energy back to the main city power grid. This helps your utility bill even more, as it works in your favor. The more unused energy you send back to the main grid, the more credit you get on your utility bill.

Of course, every state will be different, and your utility companies may not be equipped for this scenario, but it will be in your best interest to find out. With all these options available to you, you may still feel like a solar energy system is too much to afford right now.

The good thing is that solar energy is not going anywhere for a while. You can choose to save up slowly, or put your tax refunds away into a savings account. You may find that by the time you have enough money saved up the prices may drop significantly.

Solar energy is coming to the attention of a growing number of people but in terms of using it, there is still quite a long way to go. Environmental concerns can result in solar energy having a significant role in our future. Energy from the sun has always helped to keep us warm even in the very distant past. There are several alternative energy sources but solar power could be the most pragmatic of all of them. In the 1830s, a portable oven that was fueled by solar energy, was used on a safari. That was the beginning of something that can now be taken advantage of by virtually everyone. Numerous new solar power applications are being developed constantly.

The problems encountered with energy supplies has raised the need for solar energy. Individuals have been setting up solar panels on their roofs as far back as the 1970s. Houses have been powered in this fashion even if it is alongside traditional sources of power. It is becoming more typical for homeowners to be running their whole home with their solar panels. These types of homes use direct power during the day, and battery stored power every night, sometimes using walmart solar batteries. As such, the other types of energy are not necessary.

For many folks, the sole reason they have solar energy is to power a hot water heater. The manner by which this works varies based on the method used. Either passive energy, with the sun warming up a water tank, or solar collectors with the sun heating fluids to be transferred. Basically, tubes are fitted behind the solar panels. The sun heats up fluids inside the tubes. Heating for the water is supplied as the water tank is adjacent to the tubes.

Heated swimming pools are one more example of where solar water heating systems can be utilized. The swimming pool receives water that the sun has heated up as it was in the tubing. This is a good way for a pool owner to save energy by not having a need for a swimming pool heater. Manufacturers of solar applications are constantly trying to find new things to take advantage of solar power. Solar power for an RV for those going on a road trip is an example of how this is evolving into other areas. There are even small solar panels that can be used for laptops and netbooks, and cell phones. Be sure to read a solar panels review before purchasing these specialized panels however.

As the prices of energy go up, the marketplace will offer more of this type of product. Even a modest shift to solar power, over traditional power, will help our planet. The more we use non-renewable power sources, the more the chances are of them running out.

If our earth is to survive, we need to make more eco friendly decisions for everyone’s future.

Fossil fuels, like coal, oil and natural gas, are continually increasing in price as they become more scarce for manufactures to find. For you, this means an increase in the cost of your utility bills, among other things. Using solar energy allows you to save on your power bill straight away.

A new solar energy system may be expensive, but they are cheaper than they were a few years ago. You can also further reduce the cost of your solar system by making your own solar panels. If you have the skills and the tools for making your own solar panels, this may not be too difficult for you.

Installing a solar energy system that will generate enough power for your entire household can allow you to go completely off grid, and you will never have to pay for electricity again. Alternatively, you can install a system that simply reduces your electricity usage, and will save you some money of your power bill.

Solar panels are not complicated pieces of technology – especially if you break their construction down into major parts (and there are not many of those). A DIY solar panel project is a great way to learn about how solar power works and how you can apply it to your own home to take more responsibility for your energy usage and reduce costs. The best thing is though, that it is really easy to build your own solar panel at home – and it is cheaper than you might think too.

The first step is to find solar cells for sale, as these form the core of your panel. A solar panel is made up of a bunch of solar cells (the standard is 36) wired together in a frame and then hooked up to an energy storage facility – usually a battery. In some installations comprising of more solar panels, the entire network is hooked into the wiring of the home, so that you use the energy you create yourself. The solar energy process becomes a commercially viable business as well if you happen to produce more than you use – you can sell the excess back to the grid for real monetary profit.

I’m getting a little ahead of myself through, we were talking about a basic solar panel project that you can build yourself in your own home. I recommend that you buy new solar cells, as used cells or factory seconds that are available will have chips, cracks or other blemishes which will negatively impact on the efficiency of the cells, therefore reducing the amount of energy you gather.

So a bunch of new cells arrives on your doorstep, what now?

You will need some timber to construct a frame and some standard fastening material (screws and glue, etc) to hold it all as you want it. You will also need a soldering iron, wire cutters, some solder and some silicone caulk. If you are getting a little overwhelmed and do not know where I am going with this material, do not panic. There are excellent (and free) plans for the assembly of solar cells available online – or you can buy a kit complete with plans and materials for a more painless DIY experience.

By building a DIY solar panel you are making the most of the solar energy advantages on offer. You will be able to make use of a non polluting, clean, green and sustainable form of energy generation that will probably never break down (thanks to the absence of moving parts).

Go for it, there is no time to waste!

By now we have all heard of solar panels and how great they can be for the environment and how much money they can save you on your utility bills, right? Solar energy is a hot topic right now and everyone wants more information on the subject. This is just a quick review of the ups and downs of using solar panels to provide energy for your home. The Bad news first.

The Bad – The initial set up costs can be too expensive for most homeowners, up to $20,000 to professionally outfit a household. It can be a hassle to get a zoning variance, depending on your community you live in, if you need one. (Most communities don’t but if you live in a big downtown city, well….)

The Ugly – Most people don’t think about this but the amount of energy you can use is dictated by the sun. If you don’t have a have a backup system, it’s possible to run out of power! Either you need a good battery system to have power available when your not generating it or you need to remain connected to the energy grid in your local area. Not too many people seem to mention this when talking about solar panels.

The Good – You will save energy by converting your home to use solar power and you will be conserving resources for future generations, and lowering your impact on the planet. You can also be paid by your utility company for the excess electricity you might generate. You can make money using solar power too! Not a lot to be honest, but some is better than none. Your property values will increase when you use alternative energy sources to power your home. The government also provides tax credits for certain solar applications. Cha Ching!

To lower your initial setup costs you might consider building your own solar panels for your home. After doing some research and purchasing a few DIY guides (and getting lost in the technical details) I found one that was easily understandable and I built a solar panel one weekend for less than $250. Not bad, huh? If you want to see how easy it can be go to http://www.diysolarwind.org and be building your own inexpensive solar panels for your home next weekend!

Who hasn’t heard of solar panels? As a current hot topic, I think we all have, right? We’ve all seen them on people’s houses or even environmentally conscious businesses here and there. They are the basic building block of harnessing the suns energy to provide electricity for your home. But how much is a solar panel going to cost you for your home?

The honest answer is: it depends on what you are looking to use solar power for and how much you’re willing to invest in a solar panel system. You can spend thousands of dollars having solar panels professionally installed on your home and hardwired into your current power supply if you have the spare money. Or, if your handy with a few tools and can follow simple directions you can build your own.

If you’re serious about converting your home to solar power and don’t want to have do anything but enjoy the efforts of generating your electricity I’d suggest you use a professional. It can cost up to $20,000 depending on what area of the country you live in but a professional will recommend what types of panels to use, how many you need, where to put them on your property, and will install them for you. If your average electric bill is $200 a month and the system reduces your bill to $50 a month, it would take an average of 10 – 15 years to recoup the costs of your system.

If you’re just dabbling with the idea of setting up a few panels around the house to see how they work you might want to just buy a solar panel kit from eBay (or any other internet site that sells solar panels) that has all the parts and you just plug it in for a few hundred dollars. This would give you a good idea of what to expect from a solar panel in your area.

On the other hand, if you’re the handyman type you can find easy to follow do it yourself guides that will teach you to make your own solar panels for less than $200 per panel. All you’ll need to know is how to use a few simple hand tools, so don’t let the idea scare you. If you go this route, just be sure to find a guide that has simple directions and is easy to follow. I bought a few guides and the one I actually used had videos for each step of the building process so I actually saw what I should do for each and every step.
